With less than 5 months left until the exam, you might be wondering what steps you can take now to help your Year 5 child pass the 11 plus. You can take practical steps today and things you can be doing in the run-up to the exam that will give your child a greater chance of success.
Review The Reading
In the English section of the 11 plus exam, your child will be judged on their comprehension as well as their written skills. It is important at this stage to really work on broadening your child’s vocabulary as this will help with their understanding of the text they will be given in the exam.
Reading can also feel like a break to children. This can be useful as a replacement to “screen time” which often does little to enrich children’s academic ability. Find a good book, fiction or non-fiction, and set targets and goals for getting through books in time for the exam. The Smart 11+ Tuition reading list is a good place to start.
If you’re reading this, you probably already have a Smart 11+ Tuition tutor for your child. However, if you haven’t signed up for a tutor yet, you could consider getting one for the final stretch. We run summer courses too which can provide the boost your child might need just before the exam to gain the extra knowledge and skills.
We know the difference tuition can make to children, but you don’t have to get your child tutored. You may be able to do the work yourself, although the experience of teaching your children during lockdown may have put you off! With our without tuition, getting your child to work outside of school time is the only way they’re going to perform to their best in the exam.
One of the best ways to help your Year 5 child pass the 11 plus is to practice completing exams. If possible you should do a few at home but you can also book your child in for mock exams in the coming months which will feel like the real thing. It will allow them to get an understanding of what it will be like on the day. Ensuring that your child knows how to fill out the paper sets solid foundations for them to turn up on exam day, focus on the questions, and get the best outcomes.
