Once you’ve decided that you want your child to complete the 11 plus exam to try and get into a Birmingham grammar school, you then need to make the decision around preparation. Naturally, you can work to prepare for this together with your child. However, you can also get some assistance with your child’s preparation. You can always seek the help of a tuition company, like us! The big question is when to start 11 plus tuition. We’ve written previously about choosing between group and one to one tuition, but today’s blog is about when it is best to start your child’s tuition.
Earlier The Better?
Actually, we feel there is probably a lower age limit to starting preparation for this specific test. Some of the concepts tested in the 11 plus aren’t taught in primary schools until later years. Preparing significantly earlier could just be confusing. We have found in our sessions that some particularly bright Year 3 children are able to keep up with the work. It is absolutely no bad reflection on a Year 3 child who can’t do the work. All our pupils sit a baseline assessment during their tour of the centre so we can let you know whether it is the right time to start tuition.
When Do You Think Is The Best Time?
Year 4 is a really good time to start tuition. Most children are mature enough to be able to sit down and learn outside of school. This time also means that your child can build their skills steadily. It is important not to put too much pressure on your child at this point, as this can lead to your child experiencing burnout. That’s why spreading it out with some tuition once a week and reading for pleasure. At the time of writing in January, this is a great time of year to start your child off, as this gives them a 6-month head start on those pupils who start in Year 5.
Is It Too Late To Start During Year 5?
Starting at the beginning of Year 5 is quite common for many pupils. This gives them 12 months between starting tuition and sitting the exam. This is an ample length of time for many pupils to learn the required skills and techniques. Starting partway into Year 5 is also good, particularly for bright pupils who just need help with a particular part of the 11 plus exam, like Maths, English, verbal or Non-Verbal Reasoning. It’s also good to help with exam tips and tricks that children aren’t necessarily taught in school.
How Do I Find A Tutor?
We appreciate that you’ll want to make the best choice for your child. Finding the right fit is as important as when to start 11 plus tuition. Whilst group tuition works for some children, it doesn’t for others. That’s why it’s important to speak with a few tutors to get the environment right. We believe it’s really important to assess a child’s ability so that tuition can be personalised to a child’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s important to hear what other parents say so definitely ask them when you visit a centre. Definitely check the companies reviews too. (Our’s are here!)
