There is no clear-cut answer to this question, and it very much depends on the child. For some children they can pass the exam with minimal tuition, however, due to the extremely competitive nature of the 11+ exam many children require a more structured approach.
In our experience, it is most common for children to start their preparations in Year 4, however many children begin their journey in Year 3 and others begin in Year 5 and are successful. It comes down to each individual and their starting point.
We have a range of 11+ courses designed for children at different points in their 11+ journey.
We know from experience that the best preparation for exams cannot be achieved in a brief period of time. Our approach is designed to support children before, during, and after exams.
It is never too late or early to begin your journey and we will be here ready and waiting to help you!
A grammar school is a state secondary school which requires an entrance exam called the 11+. There are no fees to pay, and they have a strong focus on academic achievement as they select pupils based on ability. They are very similar in nature to an Independent School, however they are free.
Private schools are fee paying schools however scholarships may be available. They require an entrance exam like grammar schools but with a greater focus on creative writing and long written answers instead of multiple choice. Unlike grammar schools, private schools don’t have to follow the national curriculum so they can set their own curriculum.
They have great facilities much like private schools, however there are no fees to pay. This provides an opportunity for an outstanding education for all families as pupils are eager to learn and succeed.
The 11+ exam is designed to assess eligibility for grammar school. You register your child for the exam in May of Year 5 and they will sit the exam in May of Year 6.
The West Midlands Grammar School partnership is a collaboration between the 3 West Midlands consortiums: Birmingham, Warwickshire, and Shropshire, Wolverhampton, and Walsall. All 3 consortiums still exist with the same grammar schools within them however, they are now under one partnership. This means that there is just one GL entrance examination for every Grammar School across the West Midlands.

Non-Verbal Reasoning (NVR) involves spotting rotations, sequences, reflections or the odd one out across several pictures. It is used to show a child’s problem-solving skills and natural intelligence. The best way to improve is to learn the different styles of questions which can be asked and practice as much as you can!
A strong vocabulary is essential for comprehension, and this can be improved by reading a range of texts for a minimum of 30-45 minutes every day. It is also important for your child to practice recognising synonyms and antonyms and to learn how to skim and scan the text for key information.
We recommend using a dictionary and thesaurus regularly to increase awareness of synonyms and antonyms. However, it is easier to remember words when you encounter them in context, therefore it is important to keep up a reading routine. Research suggests that it can take up to 17 exposures of a new word in conversation to retain the meaning of that word, so trying practicing new words in conversation.
Try practicing times tables in your daily life, as they are essential for many areas within maths. To improve on word problems, try sketching them out to give yourself a visual and to break it down. Throughout all maths development it is important to continually review maths methods to embed them in your child’s memory.
