Is your child due to sit the 11+ exam this September? That may be all you can focus on right now, but it is also a good time to consider what happens next.
After your child has done the 11+ exam how long until they get their results? What do the results mean? When should we fill in our local authority preference form? These are all fantastic questions, and just some of the queries we, as Centre Managers, get asked in our Centres.
We have therefore created this blog to help guide parents through this time, and proactively consider the next steps of your child’s 11+ journey.

When do we get the results from the 11+ exam?
The exams are marked, raw scores are created, standardised and consolidated into final scores. These scores are sent to you on the 15th of October, or roughly mid-October for your consideration and review.
Firstly, it is important to note that there will be two scores. They will look like this:
Total Standardised Score: 239
| English (comprehension and verbal reasoning) | 113.00 |
| Non-Verbal Reasoning and Mathematics | 126.00 |
The scores in the box, sometimes do not correlate to the overall score. This is because the results in the box are the raw scores, before they are standardised and combined based on the weightings of each subject (English and VR is 50%, Maths is 25% and NVR is 25%).
The important figure to consider is the figure in Bold.
So what happens next? If this figure is higher than 205, then you should look to apply to a Birmingham Grammar School. If it is below 205, the Birmingham Grammar Schools are unlikely to consider your child, as you have not achieved the qualifying score.
To find out more about what each score means for your child, check out our What Happens Next Guide on our website.
When do we have to list our preferred school on the LAPF?
Choosing the school you want your child to go to once the results have been received, is an incredibly challenging choice. We would recommend thinking about what happens next and attending open days before the results have come out.
You will need to submit your local authority preference form before the end of the month of October, so you will likely have 15 days to make your decision. Check out the Birmingham Grammar School website for the Admissions Timetable. Firstly, please be aware that you have 6 choices for secondary schools. This should be made up of a combination of Grammar and Comprehensive schools, even if your child has achieved an outstanding score.
Secondly, if you are in a grammar school catchment area, and your child has achieved 224 or above, this should be your first option as it is your child’s highest chance of obtaining a place.
What happens next? When do we find out if my child has achieved a place in Grammar School?
The allocation day is the 1st of March 2027.
All pupils will be informed of their place at either a Grammar or Comprehension school on this date. They will then start at this school in the coming September following the summer holidays.
Some will have achieved the qualifications to obtain a place at Grammar School, however due to a combination of both score and location, some children will not have obtained a place.
Importantly, if you are looking to attend an independent school, this will not have been listed on your local authority preference form. Therefore, each independent school may have different dates/times confirming children’s places for September. These dates may not be in line with the National standard.
